My old manager has just emailed me about a potential new job working with her in her new insurance company.
I’ve replied that I’m interested but I feel attached to my current job and the people here.
What if I move and the grass isn’t greener? Even though the company definitely pays more and have amazing new offices closer to home.
You’re talking to a serial job-hopper here – I’m always going to lean towards grabbing a new opportunity if the reasons are significant enough to warrant it, which in this case it sounds like they are:
Better money is really important. Not only will you get a better quality of life straight away, but you know you’re working for people who value you and you’re more likely to continue to secure well-paying jobs in the future. If you move for the money it also might make your current company wake up and cop on that they need to pay their employees well to keep them.
A good commute is also super high on my list when considering a job. It makes such a difference to your day to day life. Some people spend OVER AN HOUR on MULTIPLE BUSES and that’s just going ONE WAY.
I don’t mean to be dramatic. If that’s the hustle you need to do to follow your dream then I respect you. But a lot of people are just too lazy or cautious to move jobs or homes. This is your life – make sure it's working for you.
Being in beautiful offices can also be a real plus day to day. Natural light, clean spaces, plants, fresh fruit, a proper coffee machine… Not deal breakers but you’ll definitely appreciate them.
It’s also great to have an existing relationship with someone who’s senior in the company. People spend months trying to build relationships with senior colleagues during awkward kitchen encounters and elevator moments. You get to skip all that and you instantly have visibility in the company.
You don’t mention the work itself, which leads me to believe the new job and your current job are similar in scope and importance to your career.
It is a new company, which means there’s likely to be a lot of change and flexibility, and hopefully a lot of growth opportunities for you and for the business. There is more risk, but if you’re a hungry millennial this is what you need.
You mention feeling attached to your workplace and the people. Is it just the people you’re attached to? It’s likely that this company will attract a lot of like-minded workers, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t stay friends with your current besties.
From the information you’ve given me I’m all for it, I would just advise you to do your research. Know the job and the company inside out; try to speak to as many current and former employees as you can; look at what people have done after they left; see if it aligns with your aspirations.
Give your all throughout the process and keep your eyes open as well. You can often learn a lot about a company from how they deal with prospective employees, and this should help form your view.
If everything lines up, it sounds like a great opportunity. You are exactly where you need to be at this time. Do it!
